Sweaters · Quick checks

Good for: Knit, cable, turtleneck and cardigans in wool, cotton and blends.

Confirm: Fiber composition, gauge (thickness), and whether it's pre-shrunk.

QC focus: Even cable pattern, no dropped stitches, and a clean neckline rib.

Trap: '100% cashmere' at fast-fashion prices is almost always a blend — real fibers feel warm without itching and don't pile after one wash.

Wool, cotton or blend

Merino wool regulates temperature and resists odor, great for layering. Cotton is breathable and easy but stretches. A wool-cashmere blend feels luxe without the scratch — check the ratio; 10% cashmere already changes the hand feel noticeably.

Gauge and weight

A 7-gauge knit is chunky and warm; 12-gauge is fine and drapes better under a jacket. Heavier isn't always better — a stiff oversized knit can look bulky. Match the weight to how you'll wear it, not just the season.

Care that prevents pilling

Turn knits inside out, use a wool cycle or hand wash cold, and dry flat — never hang, which stretches the shoulder. A fabric shaver handles light pilling; a sweater stone works on denser weaves. Good care doubles how long it looks new.
